Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly identified Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata as the perfect signing for the club next season (Spanish source AS). The striker is struggling for first-team opportunities at the Santiago Bernabeu and he is reportedly mulling over the possibility of a second exit from the club. Morata left Madrid in the summer of 2014 to join Juventus. Despite being regarded as one of the best young prospects to have come through the Madrid youth setup, the club were simply unable to find a space for him.
His time at Juventus justified the impeccable talent at his disposal, as he was able to get the club to numerous instances including an appearance in the Champions League final. This made Real Madrid exercise the buyback in his contract and were able to get him as a backup to Karim Benzema.
Now, Spurs have emerged as a likely destination for the player, as Mauricio Pochettino has been on the lookout for a backup striker for Harry Kane. However, it remains to be seen if Morata will be prepared to play the understudy role, although next season could be vastly different at Tottenham. Apart from playing the home games at the Wembley, Spurs will once again be involved in the Champions League group stages. A favourable draw, unlike this campaign, could result in the club making significant progress into the knockout stages. This would present Pochettino with enough opportunities to satisfy two great strikers in the same squad.
It has been reported that Morata is not short of offers, as the player has been linked with moves to many top clubs. The biggest issue with regards to signing the player might be convincing him to move to Spurs especially at a time when Harry Kane is going from strength to strength.
It could be possible that Morata would arrive at Tottenham to play alongside Harry Kane in a 2-striker formation. However, it is too early to assume things and we’ll have to wait to watch things unfold in the summer.
