Tottenham have been negotiating with Toby Alderweireld regarding a contract extension for a long time now and now the Times has reported that Toby Alderweireld has already rejected two offers from the North London club.
The report claims that Alderweireld wants a release clause to be inserted into his new contract. The former Ajax defender has formed a great partnership with Jan Vertonghen at the back for Spurs and it would be a major blow should Alderweireld decide to leave the club.
Alderweireld is said to be looking at a major pay hike from his current £75,000-a-week contract. The defender knows that his wages would be doubled should he seal a move to any other top European club. It has been reported by The Times that Manchester City are interested in signing the Belgian.
Alderweireld’s agent also hasn’t opened talks of a new deal now. The player’s current contract is such that if Spurs were to extend it to 2020, they would have to include a release clause of €30 million, something that would be activated from 2019.
Spurs need to be careful about not losing a star player just because they won’t pay the wage that the player wants. The Lilywhites have extended the contracts of a number of players this season such as Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane, and Dele Alli amongst others and Alderweireld certainly deserves a similar pay bump.
This ploy by the player and his agent will certainly end up paying dividends as getting a replacement for Alderweireld would not be easy. Spurs have a great base to launch their title bid next season as well and Pochettino wouldn’t want to disturb the team chemistry by losing Alderweireld.
