Kyle Walker’s future in North London is up in the air as the England right-back seems to have fallen out of favour at Tottenham. The Englishman had a fallout with Mauricio Pochettino regarding his fitness levels and commitment to the team and has been rotated in the starting XI with Kieran Trippier.
The former Burnley man played second fiddle to Walker at the start of the season but started in the important clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea in recent weeks. This has raised further doubts about Walker remaining with Tottenham next season, especially with a number of clubs looking to sign him up.
Pep Guardiola has prioritised Walker as one of the signings that will turn around his ageing Manchester City team and it is believed that Tottenham would hold out for close to £50 million for the England right-back.
It is now being reported by ESPN that Trippier will be the next player who will be offered a long-term deal by Tottenham to keep the 26-year-old at the club for the foreseeable future.
Trippier was linked with a move to Everton a few weeks ago but this move by Spurs would ensure they can price the defender out of the reach of Ronald Koeman.
Tottenham have been playing some irresistible football at the moment and Trippier too has been enjoying a lot of playing time in the first team. It is this kind of form and Pochettino’s insistence on playing Trippier instead of Walker that has fanned the flames of the England international leaving the club in the summer.
Our Verdict
It does seem highly unlikely that Pochettino would let go of Walker, especially to a rival in the summer but there never is smoke without a fire. Should Walker decide to leave Spurs, you can bet your house that Daniel Levy will extract every Pound that he can from the right-back’s sale.
Spurs still have a slim chance of winning the Premier League title and if Trippier keeps on performing like he has in recent weeks, Pochettino would think of playing the former Burnley man in the starting XI from next season.
