Agent Of £11.5m Midfielder Rules Out Summer Move – Tottenham Fans Will Love This

Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen was very much at the receiving end of some harsh criticism in the first half of the season when Spurs were not exactly flying in the table. However, the Danish midfielder has been one of the key aspects of the Tottenham team in the efforts to win the Premier League title.

Dele Alli and Harry Kane may have taken all the plaudits, but Eriksen has been an unsung hero and has kept the team ticking along well. The 25-year-old has scored eight goals and contributed 12 assists in 33 league games this season. He has assisted or scored a goal in five out of the last six matches.

The player’s form has certainly not gone unnoticed, as several clubs have been taking a look at the midfielder. Eriksen was linked with a number of clubs even before he joined Spurs, but none took the leap of faith in the player. Tottenham are clearly being rewarded for the faith that they placed on the midfielder when they signed him from Ajax for around £11.5 million in the summer of 2013. Spurs are in no mood to sell, and it appears that the player is also on a similar stance. His agent, Martin Schoots, told Danish newspaper BT (h/tDaily Star):

“I prefer not to comment on what the newspapers write about the future. The only thing Christian wants to do is focus on playing his matches.

“We let the rumours be rumoured, even now, when Christian’s merits as a player who sets up a goal are better than anyone else, and now he scores also very important goals.

“Christian just wants to be important for the team, it is the only thing that matters to him.”

The stance from Christian Eriksen is certainly surprising considering that the club in question is Barcelona. The Catalan club have made the Danish midfielder as one of the transfer targets for the summer. According to the Mirror, he is highly rated at Camp Nou that the club see him as an eventual replacement for Andres Iniesta. The Catalan club have the big task of replacing Iniesta in the next couple of years. While attempts to replace Xavi Hernandez has certainly been futile, Iniesta’s replacement has to be a success.

Eriksen ticks a number of boxes, as he is in the same mould as Iniesta. Rather than go for a young player who has to take years to develop, Barcelona are going down the route of signing a player like Eriksen – a player who can start performing immediately at the very top level.

There certainly seems interest from Barcelona, as Schoots has refused to rule out a move in the future. With the title race coming into a critical period, it is clear that the player nor his agent want to disrupt squad harmony.
