Tottenham have been linked with defenders before, as depth in the defence department has been a problem for Pochettino. Dier has been decent at the back but he seems to be comfortable playing in the central midfield rather than central defence.
Pochettino has opted to play a back-3 formation this season and this will certainly prompt the Argentine to look at the prospect of signing a quality centre-half.
Hull City’s Harry Maguire has been a bright spark in a disappointing campaign for the Tigers. The 24-year old has caught everyone’s attention with his performances and ESPN even linked Tottenham with a move for the Englishman. Reports in the Evening Standard claimed that he would cost around £12-15 million.
The latest news now, according to The Sun is that Newcastle United have joined Tottenham in the race to sign the talented centre-half. Newcastle United are back in the Premier League after they thrillingly won the EFL Championship this past weekend when they defeated Barnsley 3-0, and Brighton drew 1-1 with Aston Villa.
Now that the Magpies have joined the race for Maguire, it would be better for Pochettino to quickly make a move for Maguire, if indeed the interest is really true.
Maguire has scored 3 goals and 3 assists for Hull City this term and has done so by playing as a defender. 4 of those goals and assists have come from a centre-half position while the other 2 have come from him playing as a right-back. This clearly indicates his versatility as a player. He can be used across the defence and is extremely strong in the air.
He is really good at intercepting the play, which indicates his reading of the game. This is an aspect that is learnt by a defender as time goes by. Hence, the fact that this comes naturally to him puts him ahead of others. He doesn’t really seem to have any particular weakness and is a complete defender.
He is also a good passer of the ball and is capable of picking out teammates from distances, thus making him an effective ball playing defender. This aspect of his will be a major asset considering the type and quality of players Spurs have up front.
It is only a matter of time before bids arrive from other big clubs as well and so if Pochettino intends to sign Maguire, he must do so as quickly as possible.
