Former Tottenham star Darren Anderton has sent a warning to Chelsea, stating that Tottenham’s starting XI is as strong as Chelsea’s and it is only the Spurs ‘squad’ that needs some strengthening.

Spurs agonisingly lost to West Ham last weekend and fell 7 points behind the Blues after what looked like a strong title challenge from the Lilywhites. However, Anderton has looked ahead to the future and says that Tottenham are strong enough on the pitch.

Spurs have the strongest English core in the country, with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kyle Walker, and Danny Rose all being English and regulars for the Tottenham XI. Almost all of them have their contracts running for the upcoming seasons and the team looks well settled. Maybe this is why Anderton feels that Tottenham only need to strengthen the squad and not the playing XI.

Darren Anderton said in an interview with 888sport (h/t Football.London),

“It’s more squad than first team for Tottenham. I remember watching them sometime in March and thinking ‘If this eleven stay fit they win the league’. Then Vertonghen got injured and for me it’s the squad that needs strengthening. They need another striker to back up Harry.”

“But in terms of a first eleven – and of course we’d all like a Messi or Ronaldo in our team – but there isn’t a lot that I would change. Chelsea’s first team is obviously great and in Hazard they have a match-winner on his own who can create a piece of magic but when the two teams put out their first 11 I’d be happy to put Spurs up against them.”

Anderton makes sense here. Certainly, Tottenham have been little lucky on the injury front and have managed to sail through those times where Harry Kane was not available – precisely why Anderton has pointed out that the team needs a backup for the English international.

With the stadium move set to happen soon and the team having lost the title for the second season running, Pochettino and Levy will be keen on bringing in some top talents to make sure they win the league next season at least, as one more failure would cause a lot of unrest within the team, eventually spoiling the spirit within the squad.
