Tottenham are set to miss out on Swansea City star Gylfi Sigurdsson, after reports emerged claiming that Everton have struck a deal for the Icelandic international. Sigurdsson, who left Tottenham to join Swansea City back in 2014, has been the only bright spot in a rather disappointing season for the Swans.
According to the Mirror, Everton have agreed on a £25m deal with Swansea City for Gylfi Sigurdsson, with the midfielder holding out for a contract worth more than £120,000-a-week. It now looks like the Merseysiders only have to agree on a deal with Sigurdsson before finalising the proceedings. The transfer fee doesn’t seem to be a problem with this one.
Sigurdsson played a huge role in Swansea’s Premier League survival scoring 9 times and setting up another 13 goals. However, the report claimed that Swansea’s survival is no assurance of them holding on to their star player.
So with Everton moving quickly to wrap up a deal for the midfielder, Tottenham may just miss out on re-signing the former midfielder. Sigurdsson has grown into a Premier League star since moving to Swansea and has established himself as one of the best set-piece takers in the league.
While the opinions of the fans on bringing Sigurdsson back to the club remain divisive, a majority of the fans seem to be happy to bring the talented midfielder back to the club.
Tottenham have been lucky with injuries this term as Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama have stayed fit for most parts of the season. Eric Dier has looked at ease playing in the midfield rather than at the back and this has helped Pochettino with his team selection options.
The rise of Harry Winks was encouraging to see but an unfortunate injury ended his season and that’s when Poch began using Dier a little bit more in the midfield.
Nevertheless, Winks will be considered as one of the options for a spot in the midfield once he returns from his injury. But that doesn’t solve the problem of depth as we surely need a midfielder or a defender (depending on the role Poch assigns to Eric Dier). Sigurdsson would have solved this problem for sure but he is an attack-minded midfielder and questions can be raised regarding the defensive aspects of his game.
However, Everton seem to have signed Sigurdsson and Pochettino may now have to look elsewhere to strengthen our already strong squad.
