Mauricio Pochettino could be looking to raid Ligue1 as he wants to add more strength to Tottenham’s central defence. SFR Sport claims that we have actually enquired about Joris Gnagnon who plays for Rennes.
The French-Ivorian central defender had a great season with the Ligue1 club and it seems like a number of other teams are also tracking his progress.
The report claims that we would have to beat the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea, Porto, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan to name a few clubs. SFR also stated that La Liga club Sevilla have already tabled a bid for him which is in the region of £11.25million.
It does seem a little strange as to why so many clubs are after the 20-year-old and with the transfer window coming up soon, a number of such rumours will be doing the rounds.
The need for a decent central defender
The need for a central defender to come into our side is important ahead of another big season. We do play with three at the back and we need cover for the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier and Jan Vertonghen.
With the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup participations all set for next season, a quality squad with depth is a major requirement.
Gnagnon played in 27 games last season and notched up just a single goal but he seems to be one of the brightest players in French football, something that might interest Poch as he has a history of working with youngsters.
We might have to act fast, as Kevin Wimmer could be one of the few players who could leave the club, as first-team football isn’t guaranteed for him next season. Gnagnon could be a great option to have on the bench. He can chip in with a few games throughout the campaign.
Pochettino wouldn’t like to bid crazy money for defensive options so the deal should not cost too much. Maybe this 20-year-old central defender could be a decent signing for us?
