If there was one team and one coach that many feared ahead of last season that had to be Pep Guardiola of Manchester City. The Spaniard did have a great record coming from Barcelona and Bayern Munich but in his first season, City just about snuck into the top four and didn’t win any silverware, something of a rarity for the former Barca man.
However, the manager believes he and the team can close the gap not only to Chelsea but also to us.
As quoted by the Independent, Pep said:
“Always the leagues are complicated to win. But of course we are going to close the gap between especially Chelsea and Tottenham, trying to be close for the next season.”
The work already has started as Manchester have signed Bernardo Silva from Monaco for £43 million and will surely add more players to the side.
This should come as a stark warning to the management at Spurs and even to Mauricio Pochettino that we cannot sit on our laurels from last season. We all know that this Spurs side is capable of not only winning silverware but winning the Premier League also.
We do have a very young side and a few quality signings in the off-season should take us closer to Chelsea and even usurp them in the race for the top spot.
City did finish eight points behind us but their revamped squad will not feature a number of old legs such as Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaleta, who have been let go on a free. Guardiola will also be given a huge transfer kitty to spend and add to his side while we will have to be a little careful with the finances in the summer.
We might not have the financial power of City but we do have a better chemistry in the side and if we can keep that going, it would be tough for any side to break us down next season.
