With the season done and dusted, teams are preparing for the upcoming summer window and that means players will try to seal lucrative moves when possible. And it seems Christian Eriksen has added some fuel to the fire about his desire to move to Barcelona with his latest quote.
The 25-year-old has always been a player that has been courted by the Catalan club and this time he was quoted by Spanish outlet Sport as saying:
“For now, there’s nothing from Barcelona.
“It’s all hypothetical, if it happens…”
The Dane was speaking while with the national team and added that he does dream about a move to the Nou Camp.
“You can dream and hope the opportunity arises. But if it doesn’t, you can’t decide on it.
“Everyone dreams of the opportunity to move to clubs. Whether it ends with a yes or no, you choose that.”
While this isn’t an open statement where he says he wants a move away, it is a little concerning that he didn’t actually say no to a move or that he is willing to stay at Tottenham for a number of years to come.
We all know that the Dane is a quality player to have in the side and Barcelona will be looking to bring in quality players in an aging side. They do have to plan for life after the likes of Lionel Messi and even Andres Iniesta and basis the form of the 25-year-old Eriksen he would fit perfectly into the Catalan side.
Tottenham have actually done well in the last two seasons and had we been a little more ruthless in a couple of games, we could have been celebrating a title or two. Eriksen has been at the heart of all that is good with the side and can actually grow and develop his game further under Mauricio Pochettino. He scored 12 goals and providing an impressive 23 assists in all competitions for the lily whites last season.
Our Verdict
It is a little disheartening reading his current comments as we have been able to take his game to the next level. Plus, we are playing Champions League football once again and there is no guarantee that moving to Barcelona will work out with regular first team football for the 25-year-old.
Another factor why the deal might not go through this summer is with the World Cup coming in 2018 and the Dane wouldn’t want to lose out on his place in the side, should the national team qualify.
Next summer would be interesting for us and Eriksen but for now, he should remain a Spurs player.
