Tottenham are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain’s Serge Aurier according to the Birmingham Mail. The report claims that Aurier would be our replacement for Kyle Walker, who is still being linked with a big money move to Premier League rivals Manchester City.
The 24-year-old Aurier certainly was one of the most impressive players for the French side when he signed for them from Toulouse in 2015 but he has had his fair share of misdemeanours and even had a falling out with former coach Laurent Blanc.
There, however, is no doubting his skill and should it come to replacing Walker, Aurier is young enough and talented enough to replace the English right-back.
The Ivorian still has a couple of years left on his current contract and even though PSG have offered him a new one, he is reportedly looking at his options and is open to moving away from the club.
There is some history with Aurier and the Premier League as rivals Arsenal also wanted to sign him before they brought in Debuchy.
A great player but his off-field issues have to be dealt with
The big issue would be dealing with his off-field antics as falling on the wrong side of a manager like Blanc doesn’t really look good on the CV of any player. Aurier also had a pop at Angel di Maria and Zlatan Ibrahimovic on social media, while he was still playing for the same team.
However, should we actually end up losing Walker to City or any other club, we should look to bring in Aurier. He does know how to steam up the pitch and join the attack and he is pretty adept at defending as well.
What will actually be the deal clincher is how much we would be willing to pay for a defender that still has a few years left on his contract and his club doesn’t really want to sell him ahead of next season. We do have Keiran Trippier to play as the right-back should Walker leave but the quality cover is what is the need of the hour and Aurier ticks all the boxes for a marauding right-back.
Poch has to make a decision and make it fast about Walker and his replacement. Though there is a lot of time before the window ends, snapping Aurier up quickly would make our intentions clear of targeting the Premier League at least.
Another good thing is our biggest rivals (yes, that other club from North London) tried to sign Aurier a few years back but the move never happened. (Daily Mirror)
