Skipper Hugo Lloris was present in the France squad along with some possible new arrivals at Tottenham and the speculation was always going to arise. Quite naturally, players, and especially captains, take the opportunity to interact with their international teammates and convince them to move to their clubs.
A certain Frenchman from Monaco FC, who won the Ligue1 title in style, has been linked with us for quite a long time now. It was even reported that we were going head to head with Arsenal for his signature.
While those reports have been doing the rounds on the internet, Hugo Lloris was questioned about the same and was asked if he had a word with Thomas Lemar regarding a possible move to Tottenham.
However, Lloris remained coy on the talks and replied with a sly grin, saying (quoted by The Independent),
“You are right to ask the question, but I cannot reply. The Premier League is very exciting. All the Premier League clubs have the capacity and the ability to bring the best players in the world. In France, we used to have a lot of talented players, and it’s true that the new generation are fantastic, but we need to give them time to get the right maturity. But as they showed [against England], they are ready to compete at the best level. Let’s see what will happen in the Premier League.”
This is clever from the captain. Without adding any fuel to the fire, he has replied in a rather polite and non-speculative manner.
Whether or not he took the opportunity of being in the dressing room with Lemar to convince the winger to move to Tottenham or not is unknown but I’d rather hope that he did.
Lemar was instrumental in Monaco’s title win and Champions League progress and was relatively underrated due to the dominance of Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, and Radamel Falcao. Lemar would be an excellent addition to our squad. He would fit in perfectly to our playing style and ticks all the boxes of the usual Pochettino style of transfer.
Imagine replacing Moussa Sissoko with Thomas Lemar on the flanks. I leave it here!
