Tottenham are looking to hijack Roma’s bid for Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth (Mirror). The 19-year old has also been linked with Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg.
According to Italian journalist, Gianluca Di Marzio Roma have been looking at Foyth as a possible replacement for Antonio Rudiger, who is set to join Chelsea for £34million.
However, the Italian giants will face competition for the young man’s signature. Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, has made signing a new centre-back a priority this summer.
Foyth revealed in an interview with Radio Continental, how he was made aware of Spurs’ interest in him.
“I discovered Tottenham were interested in me via social media”, he revealed.
“I want to play in Europe and if I am convinced by a club, I’m going. I know my agent and Veron are flying out to speak to Tottenham.”
Foyth represented Argentina in the FIFA U20 World Cup earlier this summer and is expected to leave Estudiantes in the transfer window.
Tottenham are in talks with the player over a potential deal and appear to be in the driving seat to secure his signature.
Pochettino knows the Argentinian market well and has many contacts in his homeland. Spurs are a club that has a strong connection with Argentina, too. Ricky Villa and Ossie Ardiles, were icons for North-London club in the 1980’s.
Foyth would have to go some way to emulate that World Cup winning duos’ achievements at Spurs. However, at just 19-years old, he could become a stalwart at the club for many years to come.
Although, he would have a tough job on his hands to displace the current centre-back partnership of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen. He could have to wait in the wings, before becoming a first-team regular.
Tottenham supporters have been waiting impatiently for their team to make the first signing of the summer. So far, they have not signed or sold any players this transfer window.
That is expected to change in the coming weeks with several players being linked with a move and a handful could move on.
