Football.London is reporting that Tottenham are leading Liverpool in the race for Schalke midfielder Max Meyer. They claim that the German will sign for £17million if a deal is agreed.
Meyer is heading into the final year of his contract at Schalke and the Bundesliga club are keen to cash in on their asset this summer, to avoid the potential of losing him for nothing. They will only sell if his valuation is met though, which it seems Tottenham are prepared to do.
The 21-year old has attracted the interest of many Premier League clubs, with Tottenham and Liverpool emerging as the favourites. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, was hoping to use his contacts in the German market, to lure Meyer to Anfield. It seems he has lost the race, however.
TSG Hoffenheim were also interested in the player, according to the report. They can also offer Champions League football, next season. Although, if the young playmaker chose them, it would come as a surprise.
Tottenham have been looking for more creative midfielders all summer, and Meyer could fit the bill. The North-London club sent scouts to watch him during the U21 European Championships earlier this summer, which Germany won.
If Meyer does move to Spurs, then he will hope to enjoy a better time than former Schalke playmaker Lewis Holtby, did at the club. The former German U-21 captain, left his native land too early in many people’s eyes. He struggled to break into Spurs’ side and endured a frustrating time at White Hart Lane. The move proved detrimental to his progression.
Meyer is a different story, though. Spurs would be looking to blood him straight into the starting line-up. Mauricio Pochettino’s side need a midfield metronome to control the tempo of the game. Victor Wanyama and Moussa Dembele are good players, but can’t do that.
Tottenham have also been linked with Real Madrid’s Mateo Kovacic (Daily Star). However, the chances of them being able to lure the Croatian away from the Santiago Bernabeu are slim.
The Meyer transfer now looks as if it will be completed soon, with many sources reporting on the deal. The German could be the first of many signings for Pochettino’s side this summer, as they look to go one better in the Premier League next season.
