Tottenham Hotspur are looking to close out a deal to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva as we are due to meet the club directors according to The Sun.
The North London club have been extremely competitive and consistent under Mauricio Pochettino for the past couple of seasons. Next season promises to be equally enthralling for the fans as Tottenham gets set to challenge for Champions League too.
That would mean a need to strengthen the squad although it has been extremely quiet in the market from White Hart Lane this summer. There are no additions so far which is making the fans nervous as we look for first signs of inward player movement.
Silva has been a long-standing target for Tottenham and Pochettino. The Portuguese international is the club captain at Sporting and has three more years left on the contract. Not that this would make it difficult to poach him but the Portuguese side are going to call the shots.
That explains why Sporting are demanding £26.5million for the 28-year-old. He has a release clause of €45million and Sporting are under no obligation to sell. The report also claims that Silva is a target for the big-spending fellow Premier League side Everton but Spurs are favourites to bring him to England.
There is a lot of competition for places in the midfield at Tottenham, with Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele being the favourites for the starting roles. Eric Dier is a strong presence on the bench but he is favoured by Manchester United. Spurs are not looking at selling Dier but even if he leaves, Silva could be a good addition.
The midfielder brings a lot of Champions League experience – something which Tottenham would love to have. He won the domestic cup twice with Sporting and was key to the Euro 2016 winning Portugal side. His winning mentality will add an edge to the side which explains why Pochettino is gung-ho about the combative midfielder.
The 28-year-old made his first-team debut with Sporting at the age of 18 and has played almost his entire professional career with them. He has made 165 appearances for the club and has 31 goals to his name. His experience and attitude will make a wealth of difference to Tottenham and we need to act fast.
