It is an open secret at the Merseyside that Ross Barkley will leave Everton this summer. The English international has been at logger heads with the club manager Ronald Koeman for almost a year now. Looking at the signing spree of Everton this transfer window, you are not to be blamed if you believe that Barkley is the next one out.
Surprisingly though, only Tottenham Hotspur from among the top-four clubs are interested in signing him. Looking at his wage demands, it may not be long before even we get averse to having him on our books. As reported by The Mirror, the midfielder is demanding weekly wages of something more than what Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris earn at our club. However, Sky Sports have denied this claim.
It is not that the two clubs have reached an agreement over the transfer fees – far from it. But the whole confusion surrounding the transfer makes it a difficult one to conclude.
No wonder then that we have started looking at alternatives to Barkley. One name that has been doing the rounds is that of 18-year-old teenage Borussia Dortmund sensation Christian Pulisic’s. The young United States winger is considered one of the most promising young talents in the Bundesliga.
Pulisic burst onto the scenes last year where he was a regular for Dortmund making 43 appearances in total. His returns of 5 goals and 8 assists speak only a small portion of what he brings to the table. He already is the youngest foreigner to score a goal in the Bundesliga and has been capped 16 times by his country.
His rapid rise through the famed Dortmund academy is a marvel, as Pulisic played just 15 games before bursting into the first team during the 2015-16 winter break. Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan of his and has been persuading Liverpool to break the bank for the youngster.
It is very rare to see a player with so much potential, proven performance and consistency, which is why Pulisic comes at a heavy price. The transfer fee has already made us abandon our pursuit while his wage demands aren’t helping either.
I agree that our rigid wage structure is a stumbling block for us to attract new talents, especially in this era where even mid-table clubs are ready to break the ceiling. If we decide to change it anytime soon for any player, Pulisic is ideal for that!
