Tottenham are in the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain’s Serge Aurier, who could be our replacement for Kyle Walker. According to Calcio Mercato via Telefoot, the Ivorian is unhappy with his time in the French capital.
Aurier has had his run-ins with the management at PSG and is now willing to move onto greener pastures, according to the report. The 24-year-old played in 22 Ligue1 games last season and provided 3 assists for the French giants.
We aren’t the only club looking to add Aurier to our side as Manchester United are also tracking the situation in Paris. There are a number of other clubs also looking to sign Aurier as well, with Juventus and Inter Milan too in the running. However, our need is far greater than that of the other clubs mentioned.
Tottenham do need another quality right-back ahead of the season, even with Kieran Trippier doing a great job towards the end of last season. We will be playing in the Champions League and juggling games in the Premier League will not be easy to do if we completely rely on Trippier.
The 24-year-old is reportedly rated at €25million and would be expecting wages of around €100,000 per week. The Ivorian is great in attack but there are questions about his defending skills. However, there is no doubt that working under Mauricio Pochettino would be great for the PSG man.
The major worry would be how Aurier would fit into the playing style of the Premier League. We have seen a number of foreign recruits struggle here, with Vincent Janssen and Clinton N’Jie being a couple of examples from recent seasons under Poch.
Roberto Soldado is another reminder of how moving even from La Liga does not guarantee great performances and we have to be a little careful with our finances. The last thing we would need is a player who can’t cut it out, joining us on a long-term contract.
Pochettino would have to play his cards right though and if we can sign Aurier for a reduced fee or even on loan, that would be the best option going into the new season. Trippier has to be our number one at the moment while the Ivorian would have to be the backup should he join us.
