Alvaro Morata, the new Chelsea striker, didn’t want to join Tottenham since he would have to compete with goal-scoring wizard Harry Kane, according to Mauricio Pochettino.
The Spanish striker joined the Blues for a record fee of £58 million from La Liga and Champions League winners Real Madrid in the summer (Telegraph). The deal was completed after the London club missed out on Romelu Lukaku, who opted to join Manchester United rather than seal a return to Stamford Bridge.
While Morata might not have the goal-scoring record that Kane has at Spurs, the former Southampton manager revealed that the Spanish striker was a target for us a couple of years ago but he didn’t fancy the move since Kane was already sparkling in front of goal for us.
As quoted by the Daily Mail, the Argentine said:
“It’s so difficult to convince good players to come and then be on the bench. Then the problems start.
“Morata talked about myself in the media. He said: ‘Mauricio called me’. That was from the beginning, two years ago or more.
“He said to me: ‘Why do you want me if you have Harry Kane?’ You know, if you go to try to sign a striker, they will say: ‘Eh gaffer, you want me for what? To be on the bench?” the Argentine coach explained. “Because it’s Harry Kane, I can’t compete with Harry Kane or Hugo Lloris or different players.”
The Argentine manager also defended Daniel Levy as we have not made a single signing in the summer before adding that we too are trying our best to bring in players that will improve the side.
“Our fans know that we are not a club today that can compete with Manchester United and City for a player. We cannot fight. (But) the perception about Daniel is very wrong. The thing is, Daniel is very keen to sign like me. This type of player we are talking about, it’s very difficult. It’s not easy to find.”
“How have Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and different clubs tried to improve their season? Bringing players in and trying to put more pressure on their star players, their key players — and for us we need to do that too.”
We still have not signed a single player in the summer window but have seen Kyle Walker join Manchester City. Spurs are already behind the top six sides in the Premier League when it comes to bringing in new players and if we don’t deal with this quickly, we might not even match our performances from last season.
