Tottenham Hotspur could be close to securing their first signing of the summer. But, let me warn you – this is not a name that would enthuse the fans or attract attention in the transfer market.
Reports from Greek publication SDNA indicate that Spurs are close to securing 19-year-old centre-back Panagiotis Retsos. The Olympiakos first-team defender has been watched by Tottenham’s scouts in last Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Partizan Belgrade.
Who Is Retsos?
I wouldn’t blame you if this is the first time you are hearing about this player. The youngster came up through the ranks with Olympiakos and made 34 first-team appearances for the club last season.
The Greek prodigy, who was born in South Africa, possesses good pace and ability on the ball. He can also play as a right-back and his versatility should appeal to Mauricio Pochettino should he choose to firm up the interest with a bid.
Restos became Olympiakos’ youngest ever captain when he captained them against Atromitos early this year, aged 18. He hasn’t made his senior debut for Greece yet and could be called up to represent South Africa too. The youngster was watched by the scouts, playing against Partizan Belgrade in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. Restos played the entire 90 minutes as Olympiakos drew 2-2 to advance 5-3 on aggregate.
His ability to play in multiple positions and his calm head combined with leadership qualities have attracted the attention of a number of European heavyweights, apart from Tottenham.
Injuries Forcing Pochettino’s Hand?
Spurs are yet to sign a player this summer and the inflated market isn’t helping either. The sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City looks to have come at a wrong time as Kieran Trippier’s injury against Juventus in the final pre-season friendly ruled him out for the season opener.
There are pressing needs higher up as well with finding a striker as an understudy for Harry Kane also being a priority. For now, Pochettino would be interested in shoring up his defence.
However, Restos is going to be a player for the future and scouts may continue to watch him against HNK Rijeka in the final qualification round before making a bid.
