The ‘Barkley to Tottenham’ saga has failed to move off the media charts and hasn’t moved an inch on the actual transfer either. The England international refused to sign a new contract with the Toffees, thus leaving him on the edge. With less than a year remaining on his current contract, Barkley’s future at the club was more or less fixed.
However, Everton wanted a minimum of £50million for the player, which was the stumbling block in the whole saga. But, with the transfer window set to shut this month, there is urgency on all parties to take this matter to a logical conclusion.
The latest reports from Telegraph indicate that the midfielder could be captured at around £25million and the bid could come as early as this week.
Our First Signing?
The attacking midfielder, once touted as one of the best English talents, has failed to establish himself under Ronald Koeman. The relationship between the duo has been frosty to say the least. Even then, Barkley scored 5 goals and 9 assists in 36 league appearances last season, helping Everton secure a spot in the Europa League. However, his consistency is still a worry for the critics.
On the other side of the coin are his supporters who say that his potential is still a true catch. With proper coaching and environment, he can grow into a player that he once promised to be, and Spurs seem to be a good fit in that regard.
Mauricio Pochettino’s record in developing youngsters should appeal to the midfielder and that could speed up the deal. With no signings yet, the club supporters are frustrated, but signing Barkley could improve the mood among the fans.
Will we be able to galvanise our summer transfers with Barkley’s signing? What do you think?
