Tottenham are close to signing their second player of the summer according to a report from Sky Sports. Paulo Gazzaniga, the Southampton goalkeeper, is expected to be the next player to join us in the transfer window as we look to add more options in the goalkeeping department.
Gazzaniga is a known entity to Mauricio Pochettino as the duo had worked together at Southampton and is expected to provide competition to Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm. What is a bit of a surprise is that we have cooled our interest in Pau Lopez, who was on loan with us last season. The Spanish youngster didn’t play a single game for us but was expected to become one of our signings in the window.
Gazzaniga last played for the Saints in a 2-0 loss at home against us with Dele Alli and Harry Kane scoring in 2015.
The keeper spent last season on loan at second division club Rayo Vallecano and he kept 11 clean sheets from 32 games. That certainly is not a bad record to have and at 25, he does have a long career ahead of him, given that he is a goalkeeper.
While we may need more depth in the final third, it seems we are shoring up the defence first and then work on the attack.
We already have signed Davinson Sanchez for a deal worth £42million, a huge amount given that the defender is only 21 years of age.
That also shatters the idea that we don’t have money to spend in the transfer market and are incapable of bidding for good players.
Given our current goalkeeping options, it seems like Gazzaniga is a player for the future and would not be playing too many games this season for us. He would be behind Vorm in the pecking order and should injuries happen to both Vorm and Lloris, at least we will have someone who is known to Poch.
