After a convincing 2-0 victory over Newcastle, Tottenham failed to build on their confidence and momentum. Continuing their Wembley woes, the Lilywhites were beaten by Chelsea with defender Marcos Alonso proving out to be the difference between the two sides.

The North Londoners started off brightly and dominated the possession, but failed to test Thibaut Courtois with only Dele Alli taking a shot, which too, flew away from the post.

Just when they were about to gain a momentum, defender Marcos Alonso crushed their plans by firing a splendid free kick, giving his side a crucial lead. Harry Kane tried testing Courtois once, firing a low drive towards the near post, but missed by a whisker. As the game approached towards the first half, Kane yet again took the center stage but his shot struck the frame of the post while Ben Davies’ effort was brushed away by an excellent goalkeeping skill.

Chances were few and far between for Spurs and that clinical edge was always lacking. They, however, were given a lifeline after Batshuayi deflected Eriksen’s free kick into his own net. Tottenham’s celebrations were soon cut short as Alonso was the thorn in their stride, for the second time running, after his effort found the back of the net, late into the game, sealing all three points for the Blues.

Tottenham have now lost their last four games against Chelsea at Wembley. And also, they have won only a single game at this grand venue since beating the Blues in the 2008 League Cup final.

Following the result, this is how the fans reacted on social media:
