Daniel Levy divides opinion. Talk to our competitors and you can see them loathe Levy for his negotiation skills. They talk about how tough it is to get a player from Tottenham Hotspur without paying a premium.
Talk to the fans and there will be a mixed opinion. Some rate him high for building a legacy and putting a template in place for the club’s future. Some hate him for being strict with the purse and causing heartburn in many transfers while selling players when the right offer comes.
There is truth to either side but one thing is for sure. It is because of Levy’s strict actions that we were able to hold on to Eric Dier this summer, as stated by former Spurs star Darren Anderton to Sporting Bet (via Daily Star).
Dier was the primary transfer target for Manchester United who literally came with an open purse to Levy. Credit to the Spurs Chairman that we were able to hold on to the player after he categorically said that ‘Dier is not for sale at any price’.
“Eric could have quite easily gone to United this year, but Levy made sure that didn’t happen, but he’ll want to play”, Anderton said, as quoted by Daily Star.
Levy is often criticized for accepting offers for his top players and some fans may point out the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City as a case in point. However, I personally think that Spurs came out on top after this deal.
Not only did they get a premium price for the player, they also had a ready-made replacement from the Academy. Many fans thought that Levy will not be ready to spend because of the new stadium construction and that he may resort to selling some of our best players.
It was not to be and Dier’s stay at the club is a huge pointer to this fact. The player may still leave the club in the future to get higher wages at other clubs but Levy will make sure that he gets the right offer.
Under Levy, the club has made its progress and quite honestly, the signing of Mauricio Pochettino is one of his best moves. The club’s progress looks good, thanks to our academy and Pochettino. And with Levy at the helm, be assured that our top players won’t be leaving – unless at a premium.
