Genoa’s almost-set-to-leave winger, Diego Laxalt has attracted a lot of interest from clubs across Europe. And if the reports from Transfer Market Web are to believed, Tottenham have recently approached the player over a potential transfer as well.
Having signed two players (Davinson Sanchez and Paulo Gazzaniga) in no time, Tottenham are reportedly hoping to land the Uruguayan international before the transfer window slams shut. But as always, the Lilywhites aren’t the only club interested in acquiring Laxalt as both Atalanta and Juventus have been credited with an interest as well.
Known for his versatility, Laxalt played all but two games for Genoa last season and impressed one and all with his performances. Averaging 75% of passing accuracy and winning 51% of his duels, the 24-year-old might well become Spurs’ third summer acquisition in coming days.
As per TransferMarkt.com, Laxalt is capable of playing anywhere on the left-flank, starting from left-back to an advanced winger and can also slot in at central midfield. On occasions, he has been used as a right-sided winger as well.
Furthermore, amongst the fellow Premier League sides, the likes of Liverpool and West Ham have also shown an interest, according to Gianlucadimarzio.com and Newcastle have entered the foray as well. Speaking of Laxalt’s transfer earlier this month, his agent revealed Fiorentina’s interest, saying that their €13 million bid has already been rejected. He also spoke of Atalanta’s interest and stated that a deal with the La Dea is closer.
“Fiorentina? Yes, I can confirm their offer of €13m,” he told RadioGoal24.
“Are we talking? Right now, we’re closer to a deal with Atalanta. Genoa are asking for €15m. Is the player interested in Atalanta? We’ll see, the negotiations are still at an early stage.
“Roma and Liverpool? Atalanta’s interest is much more concrete.”
Our Verdict
A player of Laxalt’s versatility will no doubt help Pochettino in long term. Besides, at 24, the Uruguayan is yet to hit his peak. But his arrival would mean the likely departure of Moussa Sissoko. Tottenham’s second most expensive player utterly failed to hit the ground running last season and was branded as the ‘flop’ of the season.
Tottenham have been drafted in a tough Champions League group, to say the least, hence, need their players to keep their form intact. Besides, what they need is stability and a sustainable squad strength; which Laxalt will bring.
