The future of Toby Alderweireld has come up for discussion once again as the stand-off regarding his contract extension at Tottenham does not see any solution. The Belgian has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League for a couple of seasons but his time at Tottenham could be coming to an end as his agent wants him to get the right deal at the London club.
The Sun claims that Alderweireld was supposed to hold talks with us at the end of last season but there has been no progress on the same. This led to a lot of speculation that he would leave in the summer with clubs such as Manchester City and even European clubs looking to take the Belgian away from Spurs.
While speaking to the Sun, Stijn Francis, his agent said:
“When you look at Toby’s statistics, they are impressive. Either he deserves an appropriate contract, or else he should be given a transfer.
“Seven or eight big European clubs are interested in signing him. There are not many central defenders around who can play like he can, but these clubs will have to negotiate with Tottenham’s chairman, Daniel Levy.”
It Is Always About The Money
Alderweireld reportedly earns £50,000 a week at the club but the side can extend his current contract until 2020. The big issue lies with our wage structure as we saw Kyle Walker move to Manchester City and then Danny Rose come out with some unflattering comments about not making enough money at the club.
What we do know is that our top performers, Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris make over £100,000 a week. While that has given us some stable footing in terms of not going in a lot of debt, there will be questions about our ambition and desire to push to the next level.
Alderweireld is one of the top players in the Premier League and our defence has been rock solid thanks to his partnership with Jan Vertonghen. Losing either one of them would be a massive blow to a side that is getting better with each season. Frankly, getting a quality replacement for Alderweireld would never be easy.
Sometimes, you have to bite the bullet and get it done. The faster we can close this deal with Toby, the better it would be for us and the players. No ones likes to have such distractions throughout the season and hopefully, Daniel Levy can sort this mess out before it snowballs into an even bigger problem.
