Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund certainly shut some of our detractors, especially regarding the entire ‘we can’t win at Wembley’ bit. Our performance against the Bundesliga side was great, especially our finishing, and that has set us up well to make it out of the group stages of the Champions League this time around.
Real Madrid are the other team that can stutter our chances and they duly won their game 3-0 at home against APOEL Nicosia.
Dortmund too were on a great run before they came to face us and former Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas stated that he was caught off guard as he claimed we would not make it out of the group before backtracking, thanks to our win.
Jenas was speaking to the Express before the game and was quoted as saying:
“I wouldn’t put any money on them getting through this group. Not as it stands. I just haven’t been given much confidence just yet.”
This came before we won 3-1 against the German side and after the match, the Englishman did allude to the fact we had a poor start to the last campaign as well. Speaking on BT Sport’s post match programme, he said (as quoted by HITC):
“There is a lot to happen in this group yet, but that’s made me feel a lot better. It was a good start after a poor start last season.”
Last season in the Champions League, we lost our opener at home against Monaco and never really recovered before being knocked out of the competition.
While we have won our game in the Champions League, we are yet to register a win in the Premier League at Wembley this season. There have been a couple of frustrating results, especially the 2-1 loss against Chelsea but with Harry Kane firing again, Wembley could turn into be a fortress for us in the coming days.
The Champions League however, has to be taken seriously, as making it to the knockout round will bring us a lot of cash, something we need since we are in the process of moving to a new stadium soon.
We also have to make it to the top four come the end of the season and anything less than that will be seen as a major failure from Mauricio Pochettino and team. However, we are notorious for being slow starters in August and pick up from September onwards.
Winning against Dortmund will give us immense confidence ahead of our next game, which is against Swansea City at Wembley.
