The Belgian defender is in the midst of a contract negotiation with the club and has become the subject of constant transfer speculation. He is a vital player for Spurs after establishing himself as a key defender for Mauricio Pochettino. Together with Jan Vertonghen, Alderweireld has established a strong partnership that has been the cornerstone of Spurs’ frugality at the back.

The 28-year-old has been in negotiations with the club over a contract renewal. However, his agent kept insisting that Tottenham must reward him with an improvised contract or let him leave the club. The agent kept talking about interest from several top clubs, to spice up the discussions and demand a new deal.

There were questions if Alderweireld would be able to concentrate on the pitch with these things are at the back of his mind, but the defender was quick to refute the concerns and indicate that he is all set to leave the contract talks to his father and agent.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the centre-back said:

“I am trying to focus on the pitch, trying to help the team, give my quality on the field – that’s important and the rest will come.

“I have my father and my agent who are sorting out that kind of thing. Me, I am here to play football, to win things with Spurs and to give my best for the team. I did that from day one and I will do it now as well.”

His contract with Spurs expires in 2019 and the club can trigger a one-year extension. However, such an extension would trigger a release clause of just €25million which would leave the club vulnerable to potential bids from Premier League rivals.

Manchester City have been heavily linked with the player as Pep Guardiola sees him as the ideal replacement for club captain and injury-prone defender Vincent Kompany.

After a slow start to the campaign, Spurs have brought their campaign back on track with a 3-0 win against Everton at the Goodison Park. They even started their Champions League campaign brightly with a 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund at the Wembley.

Spurs now welcome Swansea City to their temporary home and all eyes will be on the team if they can continue their home resurgence. Winning at home, with all the worries around their record at Wembley, is crucial for our campaign.

Pochettino knows that this can only be achieved if his key man, Alderweireld, has his mind on the game and not on the transfer window.
