Tottenham Hotspur progressed in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Barnsley. Mauricio Pochettino is happy with his side’s performance but one player who seems to have impressed him the most is Argentine defender Juan Foyth.

The youngster was one of the brightest players on display as the Lilywhites progressed to the next round. Having made his debut at Wembley, the former Estudiantes’ youngster did not feel any pressure and that impressed his manager. As quoted by the Evening Standard, Pochettino said:

“It is difficult because he plays his first game with not too much time to know the way that we play or to work with the team, the whole team I think he was calm and relaxed in the game.

“I am happy because obviously it is difficult, he came from Argentina to play in England it is not easy and then his debut is at Wembley, that is more pressure on the debut.”

The youngster, who is hailed as one of the top youngsters in his age group in the world, was targeted by many teams across Europe. French big spenders Paris Saint-Germain were reported to be the club with the biggest interest, apart from Tottenham.

However, it was a combination of Pochettino’s presence in the Tottenham dug-out and the scope of greater game time at the White Hart Lane that pulled Foyth to North London. Pochettino, for his part, has indicated to Foyth that he would be given enough chances to impress at the White Hart Lane. The Argentine manager never promised Foyth that he would get to walk into the first team straight away.

With a lot of options at his disposal, Pochettino knows that Foyth’s path to the team is not easy. However, he also knows that the youngster would get chances to impress and it is completely up to the player to grab them with both hands.

If we look at his Wembley debut, there is no doubt that Foyth has a great future at the club. For someone so young, he showed great maturity and courage to come up with a bright performance. Frankly speaking, the 19-year-old hardly had enough time to acquaint himself to the new surroundings, having joined the club only at the end of August.

Pochettino would also hope that the win would signal the end of their Wembley travails. Their temporary home has not been our happiest hunting ground as Pochettino looks to find the key to success at Wembley.

The Argentine manager would feel that the impressive performances of his youngsters – especially Foyth, is a huge confidence booster.
