Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Bundesliga teen sensation David Philipp and could face a challenge for his signature from fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool, according to The Sun.
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder is on the books of Werder Bremen and has already won rave reviews for his performances with the German club’s junior teams. The midfield ace scored 18 goals and assisted 21 last season for the Under-17 side of Werder Bremen, catching everyone’s attention.
No wonder then that Premier League sides are chasing his signature. Reports from Germany indicate that both Liverpool and Tottenham are interested in the youngster.
Philipp was promoted to the Werder Bremen Under-19s this season and has started exceptionally well, scoring twice and providing four assists already. Bremen academy director Bjorn Schierenbeck has high hopes for the youngster and feels that it is a matter of pride that their youngster is being courted by Premier League clubs.
Bremen are well known for the quality of their academy graduates. The North German club prides itself on developing stars from within than buying them, and surely Philipp is one among them. The prodigy has already caught the eye of the national team and is on the brink of a call-up to the German national Under-19 side.
Philipp has a contract with the North German club that will expire next summer which means the door is open for Tottenham to make a move.
Mauricio Pochettino has already garnered a name as a youngster-friendly coach and that could help sway Philipp’s decision in our favor. If signed, together with Juan Foyth, he could form the nexus of next-generation stars at Tottenham. I guess I could make a take a free bet and punt on them to make big strides.
With the new stadium set to be opened next season, the German youngster could be tempted to make a switch to North London and continue his progress.
Pochettino should, however, be aware of Liverpool’s interest in the youngster. The Reds hope that the presence of fellow German Jurgen Klopp at Anfield could persuade the youngster to make a move to Liverpool than Tottenham.
Will Tottenham be able to persuade Philipp to join Pochettino at the White Hart Lane?
