Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signing Davinson Sanchez has been rated as one of the top young defenders in his age group. The Colombian had been courted by many top clubs but chose to join the Lilywhites in the summer.
One reason for the defender choosing Spurs is the presence of Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine persuaded Sanchez to join him at Tottenham and the youngster is happy to have made the right decision. In an interview with The Daily Mail, the defender spoke about life at the club and how he plans to live up to the expectations.
The defender claimed that the manager was a great influence in getting him to make the move. There were reports that Barcelona were interested in a big money move, although nothing materialised. It was only Tottenham who came up with a concrete offer and Pochettino helped swing the deal in Tottenham’s favor. As quoted by Daily Mail, he said:
“I had a fantastic time at Ajax and we reached the Europa League final. This summer, I heard a lot of noise, but Spurs was the only offer on the table. Mauricio Pochettino is a huge influence.
“I saw the chance to grow as a player. He is a truly great coach. To be a great coach is to be a great person. He can joke with you but you go out there and you want to fight for him.”
The Colombian joined the club in a £42million move which is a club record. Naturally, the expectations are very high as fans want the youngster to settle into his life quickly and make a mark in the Premier League.
Sanchez made a great impression at Amsterdam and Ruud Gullit labelled him as the best defender to have played for Ajax since Jaap Stam. His boss from last season at Ajax, Peter Bosz, describes him as a ‘monster’ and that itself is a great testimonial.
He had only one season at Ajax after joining them but the 6ft 1in defender imposed himself so much that the Dutch club eventually made a huge profit.
Sanchez admitted in the interview that he felt edgy on his first few days as a Spurs player but has now settled and is enjoying his life with Tottenham.
“When you come into a new group for a big fee, you want to earn the squad’s respect. It’s not insecurity but you want them to trust you.
“The first days I felt on edge, because the first time you walk out there you are alone in your thoughts. Now I am really enjoying it. This team has been fighting for the Premier League the last couple of years and this year we want to really go for it and win the title. But we must work hard.”
Going by the start he has had at the club, Sanchez has made all the right moves. In his first three starts for the club, he has seen Tottenham concede only one goal, including a memorable win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. The Colombian fared well in the 3-2 win over West Ham United as well, earlier in the day.
For a player coming to England for the first time, playing in the Premier League can be a daunting experience. Not for Davinson Sanchez who continues to impress the fans with every passing game!
