Tottenham should do business with Real Madrid but not for Harry Kane, according to the former Lilywhite David Ginola. The former French international was categorical that Spurs should keep their star man and should instead raid Madrid for Gareth Bale and Luka Modric.
Ginola was speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast for talkSPORT and touched various facets of development at his former club. He believes that the opening of the new stadium would tempt Tottenham to cash in on their star striker.
Kane’s stock is rising with every game and he has become one of the top strikers in Europe. He has already scored 7 hat-tricks in 2017 and has 11 goals in all competitions this season. That triggered reports of Real Madrid preparing a stunning £177m offer for the hotshot striker.
When asked if Spurs should cash in on the forward Ginola broached on both sides of the matter.
“That’s a tricky question. Selling Kane right now, nobody would understand as a fan. Thinking about the club, thinking about the money on the table – you can think twice.”
Before you take your knives off for the former French international, let me clarify that Ginola went ahead and said that he wants Tottenham to show their ambition by keeping hold of the 24-year-old.
He believes that keeping Kane will help Mauricio Pochettino build a side that can be the best in Europe in the coming decade.
“Why not think about building a team that in the next five, ten years will be the best in Europe?”
That is a fair expectation given the improvement Pochettino has been able to bring to the club. Critics will point to the lack of silverware at the club but as a fan, I’m happy that the progress is in the right direction.
Together with keeping Kane, Ginola opines that Tottenham should go ahead and bid to bring back Bale and Modric to the White Hart Lane.
“Bring Bale back to Tottenham and keep Harry Kane and bring in a new era for Spurs. I am talking about five, ten years coming, they will be brilliant.
Modric [as well] would be fantastic. Modric in the middle of the park, Bale on the left hand side, Kane up front, Dele Alli as the number ten – that could be interesting.”
The mere thought of having this combination itself is exciting. Tough, but not impossible. The challenge, though, would be to resist the huge transfer amounts that would be offered by Madrid, who have a habit of ripping us of our best talent. Daniel Levy has a poor record of ‘selling players when the right offer comes’. Now is the time for him to show that he can keep the player even if a huge offer comes!
