Tottenham needed another striker this season as they let go of Vincent Janssen and it was a bit of a surprise seeing Fernando Llorente being the chosen one after Mauricio Pochettino signed the Spanish striker from Swansea City.
Llorente is not the same kind of player as Harry Kane but being 32 years old, he certainly was not one of those young players that Pochettino regularly signs for us. Our other signings, Davinson Sanchez, Serge Aurier, Paulo Gazzaniga and Juan Foyth all fall under the ‘young’ category but that was not the same for Llorente.
And while speaking to the London Evening Standard Pochettino spoke about why he signed Llorente and even stated that the Spaniard was perfect for us.
“Daniel Levy has never said to me ‘we cannot sign players who are over 25’. I promise you he has never said that.
“All we do is try to find a profile that will fit what we need for the club. When you look at Harry Kane’s form in the last few years, it is not easy to find a player who can compete with him.
“For a club like us it is not easy to find the right player under these circumstances. That is why Llorente is perfect. He fits very well in our project.”
Even though Llorente has not found the back of the net for us, he will be a good option to have. It is also refreshing to see that we do sign players that can do the job we want them to and not be forced into buying only players with potential.
Llorente was the reason why Swansea avoided the drop as he scored 15 goals for the Swans in the league. The former Juventus man would be a great option for us when Kane needs a rest. The Spaniard did have a good outing against Real Madrid and even though we did not win the game, he formed a great partnership with Kane.
The 32-year-old might not have been the first choice for a number of supporters when it came to being cover for our English striker but Llorente is a great option that we have bought on the cheap and it will not be a surprise if he does come good sooner than later.
