Tottenham are still interested in Barcelona’s Andre Gomes, but they may have to ward off interest from Juventus to land him. According to reports from the Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo, Tottenham are looking to revive their interest in the Portuguese midfielder but the Italian Champions are looking to trump them.
It is an interesting scenario for both the club and the player because Barcelona believe that he would eventually adapt to the club’s style. However, he is still far from his best and Ernesto Valverde does not consider him as a regular starter.
The Catalans are not averse to sending him on loan to see if he can pick up his form and come back to Nou Camp as a changed player. If that is not possible, they are looking to recoup most or all of the €30m they paid for the player.
That is where Juventus have an edge, as the Italian Champions have planned to make a loan bid with an option to buy while Tottenham have requested for Barcelona’s asking price for a permanent transfer.
Juventus are known to making loan deals for players and Barca will have to decide soon on the out-going players to fund for the pending contract renewal of Lionel Messi.
Tottenham made a late effort to sign the player in the summer window, but Barcelona pulled off the discussions at the late hour as they couldn’t get a replacement.
Mauricio Pochettino still believes that Gomes would be a good fit for his squad. So he could go back in January with a similar offer of purchasing him outright.
If Tottenham can persuade Barca to let their player leave permanently, they could move ahead of Juventus in the race. In a World Cup year, it is important for the midfielder to play regularly and get his form back. Nothing appeals more than working under Pochettino – one of the best in the business. Tottenham can take advantage of Barcelona’s situation of raising funds and make a bid for the midfielder.
Do you think Gomes would be a good signing for Spurs?
