With the January transfer window approaching soon, rumours are getting razzmatazz and one from the Italian media outlet Calciomercato claims that Tottenham Hotspur currently find themselves sitting in the pole position to sign one of Switzerland’s hottest properties, Dimitri Oberlin.
As the season approaches the business end, it is high time that Mauricio Pochettino starts planning his January transfers’ blueprint. Tottenham didn’t do too much business in the summer window and barring Davinson Sanchez, none of Pochettino’s signings has made a positive impact. Fernando Llorente, in particular, was bought as a deputy for Harry Kane, but the former Swansea man has failed to live up to the billing.
Having said that, it is being reported that Tottenham have joined the likes of Arsenal as well as Juventus, Napoli and AS Roma to sign Basel’s 20-year-old attacker Dimitri Oberlin, who hails from Cameroon. Oberlin is currently on loan at Basel from Red Bull Salzburg and has already featured in their UEFA Champions League campaign. His most notable appearance came against Manchester United and his exploits haven’t gone unnoticed.
In 23 games across all competitions, the 20-year-old has netted 8 goals and 3 assists. Certainly, a decent return to say the least. Basel, on the other hand, rate him highly but they have dismissed the possibility that they will look to sign him permanently. The player, on his part, prefers a move to the Premier League instead.
Many might wonder as to who Dimitri Oberlin really is. Another potential Youtube star? That would be a harsh assessment of the player’s skills and talent. His style of play is described as one of the most versatile, given that he is perfectly capable of operating in both the channels and also up front.
“If Oberlin had done everything right, today he would be at one of the 10 best clubs in Europe,” Remo Gaugler, Basel team planner, says about the player who rejected the chance to join United’s Under-18s a few years ago and turned down Bundesliga hot shots RB Leipzig too, according to Goal.
But again, at his age, he is sometimes criticised for his inconsistency but that can be improved with time.
Would you be fine with Tottenham signing Dimitri Oberlin?
