Chris Wilder fears losing £20million-rated Sheffield United starlet David Brooks in the New Year. The Sheffield United boss has revealed he has held several conversations with other clubs over the future of young star Brooks, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly in the hunt for his signature.
According to Mirror, Spurs and Premier League rivals, Liverpool and Everton, have monitored the 20-year-old wonderkid regularly throughout the season. The Championship club could be bracing themselves for a flurry of bids from the Premier League for the richly-gifted Wales midfielder when the January transfer window opens up.
The Wales international is easily one of the best midfielders in the Championship and signed a new four-year contract with Sheffield United only in October. But it is thought Brooks could be sold if a big-money bid comes in from any club as the midfielder is rated at around £20million.
Wilder has stated that Brooks will not be sold by the Championship club in the January transfer window. However, he has admitted that the final decision on the future of the 20-year-old will be made by the club’s board.
Wilder told the Yorkshire Post,
“There’s a lot of off-the-record conversations, whether it be agents, or even clubs themselves asking what we are doing.
“But nothing changes from my point of view. David is not for sale because he is part and parcel of what we are doing going forward. Yes, I have had a conversation, and people understand he is an outstanding talent.
“But I have made it loud and clear that he isn’t for sale from my point of view. If anybody makes a bid, football now, it doesn’t really go through managers.
“It goes through chief executives and chairmen, that’s a decision the club have to make if they do get bids and offers from other clubs for our player.”
The Blades boss added, by saying:
“One thing I will say, I do look at our squad now and think we have a lot of assets in our football squad since we walked through the door.
“Regarding David Brooks, or any other player, we have some really good players here and players who will be attractive propositions for other clubs.”
Brooks has shown himself to be an exciting talent in the Championship, and if Spurs are serious about the young gun, they need to act fast.
