Eighth hat-trick of this calendar year followed by surpassing the likes of Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer and Barcelona great Lionel Messi, a hat-trick by Tottenham’s own Harry Kane helped the Lilywhites to run riot at the Wembley, as Tottenham defeated Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton 5-2 in an emphatic fashion.
All eyes were on Harry Kane as the players stepped on to the field and it only took the English some 22 minutes to stamp his authority in the best way possible. Winning a free-kick in a dangerous area, Kane was obviously the target for Christian Eriksen and from a point-blank range, the striker broke Alan Shearer’s record by scoring his 37th league goal of the year with a simple header.
Some 17 minutes after, Kane added another to his kitty after Dele Alli’s brilliant ball found Son Heung-Min through on goal. The South Korean found Harry Kane standing right on the mouth of the goal and with a simple tap-in, Lionel Messi’s tally was broken. With the brace, Kane registered 55 goals in the 2017 calendar year, surpassing the likes of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, PSG’s Edinson Cavani, Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
That certainly is a great feat to achieve, but what grabbed everyone’s attention is the number of games Kane took to reach the milestone. The Englishman only took 50 games to score 55 while the Barcelona forward has 54 in 64 games, followed by 53 in 59, 53 in 55 and 53 in 62 by Ronaldo, Lewandowski and Cavani respectively.
As if that wasn’t it, Kane added another with a brilliant finish, taking his tally to 56 goals in 2017 and 39 goals in a year in the Premier League. Southampton, on their part, could only reply with two goals but their fate was sealed by then. And with that being said and done, this is how Tottenham fans reacted to Kane’s achievement:
He’s only gone and done it. First Shearer’s record and now Messi’s total is surpassed. Well played @HKane. Absolutely magnificent achievement.
