Tottenham are tracking Ajax starlet Donny van de Beek, according to reports. The 20-year-old has been tipped for a bright future after some impressive performances and clubs are already tracking him.
After Sky Sports reported that Tottenham were closely monitoring the midfielder way back in October last year, it appears that Borussia Dortmund have now entered the race to sign him, according to Italian media outlet Calciomercato.
With Dortmund’s recent interest in Van de Beek, alarm bells have already started ringing for Spurs, and Mauricio Pochettino needs to act fast to sign him in January. Apparently, Pochettino remains keen on bolstering his options in the middle of the park after missing out on England international Ross Barkley to rivals Chelsea.
Spurs have enjoyed substantial success in recruiting from Ajax over recent years, with centre-back Davinson Sanchez following the footsteps of Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen to the club.
Toby Alderweireld makes up the quartet of former Ajax players to have been successful at Spurs so it’s little surprise that we’re willing to return to the Amsterdam club for fresh talent.
In terms of Sanchez’s addition, he is already being considered a hit within the club, having slotted very well into the team, excelling in the Premier League and Champions League since his debut at Burnley in August.
Van de Beek is a central midfielder, who can also play as a right-back. He was an important player for Ajax under Marcel Keizer and is expected to be the same under new manager Erik ten Hag too. The 20-year-old has netted 8 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions for Ajax – all from a central midfield role.
The Dutchman’s stock continues to rise after a series of fantastic displays and alongside Spurs and Dortmund, he is beginning to catch the eye of Europe’s elite.
Van de Beek seems to have developed furthermore this season and has become a crucial player for the Dutch outfit. He’s filled the void created by Davy Klaassen and is even being compared to our playmaker Eriksen. He has an exceptional passing ability and can control the tempo of games. He is playing with a maturity beyond his age.
The Holland international would undoubtedly fit into Pochettino’s high-intensity pressing game with his incredible stamina levels and athleticism coupled with the desire to score goals. What our club needs to do is act fast to try signing the midfielder in January.
