An 11th-second strike from Christian Eriksen coupled with an own goal from Phil Jones gave Tottenham a well-deserved victory against Manchester United at the Wembley.
The 25-year-old Denmark international was at the receiving end of a well-worked move right from the kickoff before Dele Alli flipped the ball on to his way. Scoring his 7th goal of the season, Eriksen became the joint-third fastest goalscorer in the Premier League. Tottenham were always the better side right from the first whistle and pressing high up the field, chances came far and between only for David De Gea to stand firm between them and the net.
A win, witnessed by a record Premier League attendance 81,978 – saw Tottenham close the gap between them and the 3rd-placed Liverpool and Chelsea. The Merseysiders defeated Huddersfield 3-0 recently, taking their tally to 50 points in 25 games. For Chelsea, the Blues lost to Bournemouth at home and that has given Tottenham a perfect advantage to climb up the log.
Minutes before the half-hour mark, Tottenham found themselves leading by two goals after defender Phil Jones fired into his own after Kieran Trippier delivered a low cross into the area. Meanwhile, the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min came close to scoring but De Gea made sure the scoreline stayed the same.
Tottenham have now won three successive home league games against Manchester United for the first time since September 1966. Talking in particular, Christian Eriksen eventually turned out to be one hot figure to handle as he was involved in everything that Tottenham did. And the fans, well… this is how they reacted:
thank you, turned a crap day day into a great one.
