Reo Griffiths has been in sensational form for Tottenham’s Under-18 side and that has seen him garner attention from some of Europe’s top clubs. The 17-year-old scored a sensational hat-trick for Spurs’ Under-18 side on Saturday in a 4-1 win over north London rivals Arsenal in the Premier League Cup, which sees Spurs progress to the final to face Chelsea.
Griffiths, who has featured for England at youth level has emerged as a top transfer target for Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, the ESPN report.
The teenager’s exploits this season has seen him be dubbed as ‘the new Harry Kane’ at the club. He is another starlet from the Spurs academy who is tipped to shine and make it big just like Kane and Harry Winks who have become an integral part of the team under Mauricio Pochettino.
Griffiths, who is yet to turn professional, is widely regarded as the next big thing to emerge from the Spurs academy after impressing for club and country during the last 18 months. RB Leipzig have hired a new head of recruitment, Paul Mitchell, who was formerly in charge of transfers at Tottenham until his exit last year and knows the player in and out from his time there.
Following England’s recent success on the international stage after winning the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cup last year, German clubs have been actively hunting the English youth talents.
Leipzig are known to be keeping a watch on English market for talents, previously signing Oliver Burke from Nottingham Forest only to sell him to West Brom at the start of the season while recently signing Everton forward Ademola Lookman on loan during the winter transfer window.
Borussia Dortmund signed Jadon Sancho from Manchester City last summer, while West Ham’s Reece Oxford moved to Borussia Monchengladbach on loan during the same time are some of the recent examples of Bundesliga clubs snaring top English talents.
Spurs will be desperate to keep Griffiths on their side but the teenage prodigy could be tempted to move if Leipzig come calling. Griffiths is reportedly out of contract on 30 June and as he has not yet turned into a professional, it has opened up the possibility of a transfer.
RB Leipzig’s interest in the youngster means Tottenham could face some problems in keeping the player at the club. But knowing Pochettino has handed youth players a lot of opportunities to blossom, Griffiths could stay put with the North Londoners and in fact, could soon get a chance to feature for the senior team.
