For a good majority of the season so far, Hugo Lloris has started between the sticks for us but if Pochettino’s pre-match press conference is to be believed, we might see Michel Vorm assume the responsibility against Manchester United.
Preparations are rife for our highly-anticipated meeting with the Red Devils in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. It is a good chance for us to lay hands on silverware by the end of this season and it is important for us to come out with nothing but a win.
When asked if Vorm could start in goal against Manchester United on Saturday, Pochettino said (as quoted by Football.London):
“You know that I never confirm the team before or confirm the players. It’s one possibility of course. We have tomorrow the last training session and I will decide tomorrow the starting XI.”
To be fair, it must be noted that Vorm has been a constant for us throughout our FA Cup exploits. However, given the gravity of the upcoming match, one might think that it would be better to rely on first-choice Lloris for this encounter but the truth is he has been rather underwhelming lately.
Despite being one of the contenders for the Golden Glove last season, Lloris’ form appears to have taken a dip and Mauricio Pochettino must be determined to not let that affect our chances of winning against United.
Hence, it does not come as a complete shock that Pochettino could deploy Vorm ahead of Lloris for this important clash.
More than anything else, it will be a splendid chance for Vorm to prove to the fans and critics that he is more than capable of taking up the responsibility. With Lloris struggling between the sticks, this will be a golden opportunity for Vorm to displace the first-choice keeper to possibly make room for himself in the near future.
