According to a report from Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Tottenham Hotspur had sent scouts to watch rumoured target Ricardo Pereira in action.
The FC Porto star is primarily known for playing as a full-back but he can also be utilised as a winger. The 24-year-old has been earning rave reviews for his performances at right-back this season and if the report from O Jogo is to be believed, Spurs are harbouring an interest in him.
Ever since Kyle Walker left us, the likes of Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier have been tasked with playing in the right-back area. While Trippier has performed admirably, Aurier’s performances have been rather underwhelming.
The player made some costly errors in pivotal Champions League clashes and was even responsible for gifting away a penalty that led to Brighton’s equaliser in a recent match.
The thing to note is that Pereira can play as a left-back as well. With Danny Rose’s lack of form, Mauricio Pochettino could also deploy the Portuguese star in that area to provide competition for Ben Davies. Pereira has been a staunch member of the Porto side this season and his versatility is his most endearing quality.
Furthermore, he is quite young, which makes him fit right into the mould of players that Pochettino desires at Tottenham. A player like him could work wonders for us since we could use him on either side of the defence. To be honest, our left-back and right-back positions require strengthening, thus making sense for Spurs to target him.
Whether or not Pereira would be an upgrade to our current full-backs remains to be seen but needless to say, he does seem like a valuable target.
