A lot of us were disappointed after the terrible loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final but former Tottenham Hotspur star Ossie Ardiles seems to believe we have a bright future ahead of us.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Ardiles said:
“We have to be very, very positive about what has happened this season. It has been, I would say, a great season.
“We got to the semi-final of the FA Cup. We did extremely well in the Champions League, beating Real Madrid. We lost against Juventus but we probably deserved better.“We are probably qualified for the Champions League next season. I think it has been a wonderful season.”
One cannot argue with that. To come from where we were a few years back to where we are now, it is truly commendable and nobody deserves more credit for it than Mauricio Pochettino. It is no easy task to build a team from the scratch with fresh talent and yet, Spurs have some of the best players in the Premier League and arguably across Europe.
However, our lack of silverware has provided a lot of fodder for the naysayers in recent times. For a long time now, we have been “nearly there” without any literal success. This season appears to be no different since all we can do now is to fight for a top-four finish in the league.
However, it is important to bear in mind that Rome was not built in a day and Ardiles seemed to agree. He went on to express admiration for Pochettino and reiterated that winning trophies will take time and patience.
“Mauricio has transformed the club from where it was three or four years ago,” Ardiles said. “We used to be one of the rest of the big guys.
“Now we are one of the big guys. We are fighting all the time. We are one of the best teams. If you put the last three seasons together in terms of points, we probably have more points than anybody else.
“Next year we will be in the new stadium so the future is extremely rosy for Spurs.”
Ardiles concluded by saying that winning trophies is not everything and that the trophies will eventually follow if we continue fighting this way.
