According to a report from ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to initiate contract talks with up-and-coming academy starlet Reo Griffiths.
The 17-year-old has scored 34 times this season and played a starring role as our U18s pulled off a sensational win to beat Arsenal’s U18 side in a recent encounter. He scored a whopping 4 goals and provided 3 assists in a 9-0 win.
For a teenager to be involved in 7 goals in a single match is absolutely sensational. Since then, there have been rumours of interest from a host of clubs.
An earlier report from ESPN had claimed that RB Leipzig are harbouring an interest in Griffiths but given his potential and skills, it would be unwise of us to even consider letting him leave the club.
If Tottenham are really looking to offer him his first professional contract, it is imperative that we do it soon. With the upcoming summer transfer window, we cannot afford to have any loose ends and Griffiths is a player who could work wonders for the first-team in the near future.
Tottenham have been crying out for a back-up to Harry Kane and clearly, Fernando Llorente is far from ideal. Given Griffith’s pace and goalscoring instincts, he could not only act as a deputy but also go on to become Kane’s long-term successor.
Also, Mauricio Pochettino is one of the best managers when it comes to developing and nurturing young talent and he could be the one to guide Griffiths towards realising his true potential. It is indeed great news that we are likely to offer him a new contract and let’s hope it happens soon.
