There has been a lot of talks about Tottenham Hotspur’s inability to win trophies this season. Despite finishing in the top places for quite a while now, we have failed to win silverware and that has truly increased the pressure on our players as well as the management.
Tottenham have always aimed towards building a team instead of merely purchasing one. Daniel Levy’s tight purse strings do not help but this is an ethic that Spurs have worked with for years now and it has paid off.
Take a look at the players in our team – none of them was purchased as superstars. However, Mauricio Pochettino developed and nurtured each of them to bring out their best and they are some of the best players across Europe right now.
Being a part of a team like this will always have its unique set of challenges and as per a report from Sky Sports, Gary Neville seems to agree.
While clubs like Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and even Liverpool have been spending to purchase readymade talent, Tottenham continue to go about it in an old-fashioned way. But at a time when winning trophies equates to success, how long can we stay afloat?
Speaking on Sky’s Monday Night Football, Neville addressed the same issue.
“I have seen them at Old Trafford in the last couple of seasons, the FA Cup game against Manchester United and the game against Manchester City, and I was disappointed.
“I was disappointed because I felt this team would continue to grow and they would get stronger mentally in order to produce those high-level performances in the bigger matches. They are still not quite ready.
“On the other hand, when you look at the spending and the competing on all fronts, it may not be a mentality thing. It may be that they will just fall a little bit short because they have not quite got the depth of the others.
“I have heard it said that Jurgen Klopp and Pochettino are getting off the hook in terms of winning trophies. But the reason that people are saying they are doing a brilliant job is because of the net spend, particularly in the case of Tottenham,” said Neville.
He also went on to talk about how clubs like Everton and Leicester have also increased their spending in recent times and that it will be important for Spurs to think about doing the same.
I agree with Neville’s words here. As important as it is to nurture young talents, it is also important to buy proven players. They are the ones who would give us the edge in big games and I think it is high time we buy at least one proven player this summer.
