The ongoing transfer window is a crucial time for Tottenham Hotspur but we are yet to make a new signing. However, as per a report from Portuguese news outlet Record, we could be inching closer to a move for Benfica full-back Alex Grimaldo.
A sum in the region of €30million is understood to be on the table and it will be interesting to see if we succeed in bringing him to North London.
Since we already have two quality options for the left-back position in the form of Danny Rose and Ben Davies, Record has also claimed that the possibility of the deal depends on Rose.
It is unclear as to whether or not the Englishman wants to continue with Tottenham beyond the end of the season. He struggled for game time last term due to injuries. Also, with Davies’ exceptional form, it has been tough for Rose to make room for himself in the matchday squad.
If he leaves Tottenham this summer, a move for Grimaldo would make sense for us. After all, the 22-year-old is one of the most promising defenders in European football and having impressed in the Portuguese top-flight, Grimaldo could work wonders in the Premier League as well.
Given Mauricio Pochettino’s penchant for developing young stars, the potential deal could prove to be advantageous for all parties involved.
It goes without saying that losing an experienced player like Rose will be a major blow but Grimaldo would be a great replacement.
