Tottenham are interested in signing Atalanta’s Rafael Toloi, according to reports from Italy (h/t Football.london). The 27-year-old Brazilian plays as a central defender for the Serie A side and did a pretty decent job with 3 goals and 4 assists for the club this past season.
Atalanta finished 7th in the league and the report claims that we have already made a bid for the 27-year-old. We are looking at the Brazilian as an option for Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld.
The former Ajax defender has not yet signed a new contract with us and it seems likely that he would be sold sooner than later.
Toloi seems to be a perfect signing as far as our current setup is concerned as he played as a part of a back-three for Atalanta last season and is comfortable with the ball at his feet.
We require defenders who can pass the ball out from the defence and Toloi seems to be able to do just that, so it comes as no surprise that Mauricio Pochettino is interested in him.
In fact, we seem to be targetting a lot of South American players since Pochettino’s arrival as Juan Foyth, Davinson Sanchez and Lucas Moura all have joined in recent transfer windows.
There was also some interest in the 27-year-old Toloi from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Hopefully, Toloi will be a cheap alternative to some of the costlier buys being spoken about in the current transfer window.
We have had our issues with defenders joining us and not performing, with Federico Fazio and Kevin Wimmer being a couple of examples. Hopefully, things will work out better for us with Toloi as we look to add more depth to the central defence.
