Tottenham have joined the race to sign Jordi Alba from Barcelona, according to reports from Spain. AS (h/t The Express) claims that we are looking to sign the 29-year-old who has a release clause of £52.5million. The Spaniard’s contract is set to end in 2020 and a Premier League rival is also interested in the World Cup star.
Manchester United are tracking the defender as well, even though he has stated that he is happy at Barcelona. The former Valencia man, however, was quick to add that his future is also dependant on what Barcelona want.
“No, no, I’m very good at Barca. If it were up to me, I would stay at Barcelona all my life. But it does not depend on me but on what the club wants.”
Alba certainly is one of the best left-backs in the world and bringing him into Tottenham might not be the ideal move given we already have a couple of quality left-backs in the team.
Danny Rose might not have played too many games last season but he is a pretty good option to have while we also have Ben Davies who did do well last time around.
Should Alba come in, it would mean the end of one of the two players but the fact that the Spaniard is 29 means that he would not be an option for the future.
Also, spending £52.5million on a position that does not need strengthening is not ideal for us. Of course, should a crazy bid come in for Rose or Davies, then we can think about replacing one of them with Alba but for now, we should just stick with what we have.
