Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho may have hinted that the Red Devils will not be bringing in Toby Alderweireld or any other defender to the side as they prepare for the upcoming season, according to the Metro.

The report claims that United had spoken to Tottenham about the Belgian defender at the end of last season but were driven away by the asking price of £75million for the 29-year-old.

The United manager seems to have given up on the defender as he spoke after the 1-1 draw against Club America in a pre-season friendly.

“Valencia, Smalling, Bailly and Shaw, they are probably the ones to start the season.”

This season will be a little different as the transfer window ends before the start of the season so Mourinho or any other club will not be able to bring in any players after 9th August.

This would come as some good news for us as there has been a lot said about Alderweireld and his future at Tottenham.

While the player wants to resolve his future, there seems to be no end to the drama and it seems he might start next season with Tottenham.

Alderweireld did play for Belgium in the World Cup but his place was taken over by Davinson Sanchez at Tottenham last season. The Colombian did produce some stellar performances and it might be tough for Aldy to usurp the young defender.

However, keeping Alderweireld in the side makes sense since he is one of the best defenders in the world and we require quality options for all positions.

If we are to sell him, the worst result option would be to do it to a Premier League rival. So we cannot be thinking of letting him join Mourinho at United.
