Tottenham had been linked with a move for Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt but Football.london reports that the Dutch club are not looking to sell their rising star.
The 18-year-old was one of the star players for the Dutch side last season and had also been linked with a move to Barcelona and Juventus.
However, Marc Overmars, the director of football at Ajax, has named three players that the club will not sell, not even for “absurd amounts”.
“Frenkie de Jong, Donny van de Beek and Matthijs de Ligt are not for sale as far as we are concerned. No, not even for absurd amounts. Let them play 40 matches for Ajax this season.
“Come back next year. We are now at a point where we say ‘boys, we do not sell’.”
De Ligt could have been the next great Ajax youngster to join Spurs as we have done some pretty good business with the club over the years.
Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez have all impressed at Tottenham since making the move from the Netherlands and De Ligt does seem like another star in the making.
Overmars is probably trying to ensure they get good value for the players and it would not be a surprise if we are the first on the list of teams when Ajax decide to sell De Ligt.
Tottenham do have a couple of quality young defenders in the side in Juan Foyth and Cameron Carter-Vickers but we can also do with some competition at the back.
