Tottenham’s memories of £85.3m superstar should help them bounce back against Inter Milan at San Siro

Tottenham Gareth Bale

Tottenham travel to San Siro for their first Champions League clash of the season and this trip should spark memories of the last time we faced Inter Milan in the competition.

Turn the clock back to 2010 and Spurs, under Harry Redknapp, were back in the Champions League and had one of the brightest stars in the world.

Gareth Bale, who eventually joined Real Madrid for a fee of £85.3m, was possibly the best player in the Premier League and the Welshman scored a brilliant hat-trick for us against the Italians.

Unfortunately, that performance went in vain as we lost the game but the triple strikes came in the second half despite us being down to 10 men.

The loss was a minor hiccup as we progressed to the knockout round but were beaten by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

A quality Spurs side set to face Inter

Bale was brilliant in that game but if we take a closer peek at our starting XI from the time, they were was nowhere near the quality we have now.

Alan Hutton, Sebastian Bassong, Tom Huddlestone, Aaron Lennon and Benoit Assou-Ekotto were some of the names starting against Inter. We did have the likes of Luka Modric, Peter Crouch, Robbie Keane and William Gallas but only Modric could be termed a “world-class” player.

Tottenham have lost their previous two games in the Premier League but we do have a stronger side than the one that travelled to Milan all those years ago.

That Inter side was littered with stars such as Javier Zanetti, Lucio, Maicon, Dejan Stankovic, Samuel Eto’o and Wesley Sneijder.

But now, Inter are coming off a poor performance against Parma. Meanwhile, Spurs have the best striker in the world, Harry Kane, and with the likes of Lucas Moura, Son Heung-min and Erik Lamela, we should get a few cracks at their goal.

We have to be wary of Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic but if anyone can get the team going again, it has to be Mauricio Pochettino.
